We are seeking a PhD candidate to contribute to cutting-edge research in developing enabler technology for millimeter-wave radar sensors, with applications in future autonomous vehicles. This research will enhance active safety systems, aiming to reduce road fatalities.
The project focuses on designing automotive radar antennas operating at 77 GHz, incorporating both dual linear and dual circular polarization. The gap waveguide-based slot array, designed with multiple metal layers, eliminates the need for electrical contact between layers. This innovative design simplifies mechanical assembly, reducing costs compared to traditional waveguide-based arrays.
The project takes a cross-disciplinary approach, integrating electromagnetics, structural mechanics, and manufacturing technology to balance performance, cost, and automotive integration. Research outcomes are expected to significantly improve next-generation automotive radar performance in terms of angular resolution, field of view (FoV), and interference suppression from nearby vehicle radars.
This PhD project is part of a collaborative research effort between Chalmers University of Technology and several industry partners. Funded by VINNOVA under the “Trafiksäkerhet och automatiserade fordon – FFI” program, the project—“Advanced Radar Sensor Front-end Modules and Solutions for Increased Road Safety”—addresses a rapidly growing and critical field.
The PhD candidate will be enrolled in Chalmers’ doctoral program and co-supervised by experts from both academia and industry.
At the department of Electrical Engineering, research and education are performed in the areas of Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, Systems and Control, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. We work with sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, such as energy efficiency and electrification in areas ranging from transport and production systems to communication solutions and biomedical engineering.
As a PhD student, your primary responsibility is to conduct research towards your doctoral degree. This includes developing new scientific concepts, performing electromagnetic design, and conducting hardware measurements. You will also communicate your research findings through presentations and publications.
In addition to your research work, you will take advanced courses relevant to the project, either through Chalmers’ graduate schools or other Swedish institutions. The position may also involve up to 15–20% teaching and departmental duties.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a Master of Science degree (or equivalent, corresponding to at least 240 ECTS credits) in a relevant field such as electrical engineering or applied physics, with a focus on microwave engineering. In addition to formal qualifications, the selection process will also consider performance in previous work (e.g., thesis projects and advanced courses), as well as interviews and potential assignments.
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong subject knowledge, creative thinking, motivation, collaboration skills, and the initiative to work independently. Prior experience in antenna design, electronics, and proficiency in scientific software tools such as Matlab, CST, and HFSS are advantageous.
This is a full-time, temporary employment, with a maximum duration of five years.
