Uncovering the Mystery of Dark Matter: Gravitational anomalies observed across cosmological structures suggest that an invisible mass—known as dark matter—comprises approximately 85% of all matter in the universe. Despite extensive research, the microscopic nature of dark matter remains one of the most compelling mysteries in modern physics. Joining our team, you will help to address this question through a unique interdisciplinary approach that bridges particle and solid-state physics.

Project overview

This project aims to model interactions between dark matter particles in our galaxy and electrons bound to liquid xenon (Xe) and liquid argon (Ar) detectors. You will develop a formalism to interpret results from leading dark matter experiments. This research combines advanced calculations of electronic properties in liquid Ar and Xe with a comprehensive theoretical framework describing dark matter-electron interactions based on effective field theory. Key tasks will include theoretical development and writing computational codes to perform simulations and analyses.

About our team

Within The theoretical subatomic physics group at the Department of Physics we focus on theoretical astroparticle physics, with a particular emphasis on phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We explore a wide range of topics, including the origins, composition, and evolution of the universe and its components. Our current studies are dedicated to the interactions between dark and ordinary matter, employing techniques from particle, nuclear, and solid-state physics. We work closely with both theoretical and experimental collaborators in Sweden and abroad. The team comprises a postdoc, two PhD students, and up to four master’s students, funded by grants from VR, KAW, and SNSF.

Major responsibilities

  • Conduct research on the theoretical modeling of dark matter-electron interactions in liquid Xe and Ar.
  • Develop original ideas and demonstrate the ability to solve complex physics problems independently.
  • Contribute to teaching activities within the Physics Department and engage regularly with other team members.

Qualifications

To be eligeble for the position, the following qualifications are required:

  • Master’s Degree in Physics corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits
  • Strong foundation in particle and astroparticle physics
  • Experience with dark matter phenomenology calculations
  • Familiarity with programming languages used in particle physics (e.g., C++, Fortran, Python)
  • Basic knowledge of solid-state physics
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills in English.

Desired qualifications:

  • Genuine interest in the subject, demonstrated by participation in conferences or academic schools.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research projects is a plus.

Contract terms

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
