Jobbannons

Do you aspire to save lives and help shape the future of safer transportation? Are you passionate about creating innovative safety solutions that benefit everyone on the road? We invite you to join us as a PhD student and lead the development of a new Euro NCAP test procedure aimed at enhancing safety for both car and truck occupants. This role calls for creativity, analytical thinking, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact.

About us

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) is committed to advancing sustainable, safe, and equitable transport solutions. We conduct both fundamental and applied research across all modes of transportation and contribute to undergraduate, master’s, and lifelong learning programs in fields such as Automotive, Shipping, and Mechanical Engineering.

Our department values collaboration with academia, industry, and society to ensure that our work leads to real-world impact. We pride ourselves on fostering a supportive, inclusive, and international environment where students and employees from diverse backgrounds thrive, contributing to outstanding research and world-class education.

About the research project

This project, a collaboration between Chalmers, industry partners, and the Swedish Transportation Administration (Trafikverket), focuses on improving vehicle safety standards through the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP). While Euro NCAP has driven significant advancements in passenger car safety, this project seeks to extend those benefits to larger vehicles.

You will develop innovative methods—both physical and numerical—to assess how truck designs protect passenger car occupants in severe collisions. By addressing the unique challenges posed by high-energy crash events, your work will contribute to creating safer vehicles for all.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As part of this project, you will:

  • Analyze experimental crash data to identify patterns and insights.
  • Design and develop new test and evaluation methods.
  • Create a test surrogate representing a passenger car for physical testing and computer simulations.
  • Simulate various crash scenarios to evaluate safety measures.
  • Estimate the potential safety benefits of the proposed assessment methods.
  • Share your findings with project stakeholders, academic peers, and the broader community through teaching, presentations, and publications.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties up to 20 per cent of working hours.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with LS-Dyna software and related tools (e.g., ANSA, LS-PrePost, METAPost).
  • Familiarity with the automotive industry.
  • Basic understanding of statistical methods and data interpretation.

We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. If you meet most but not all of the qualifications, we still invite you to apply and share your unique skills and vision with us.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
