Jobbannons

Are you interested in simulation of fluid flows, programming, and machine learning - then this PhD position might be what you are looking for.

In order to be able to meet the high demands of future aeronautical vehicles, a step change in technogy is needed - a change that will required the use of more sophisticated methods and workflows in the design process. The desired outcome of this project is a robust and efficient high-fidelity fluid flow simulation framework for the design of components for tomorrows aeronautic vehicles. We are therefore looking for a creative new colleague that wants to take on this challenge together with us. We are offering a position as a PhD student at the Division of Fluid Dynamics at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences.

Project overview

As a PhD student, you will contribute to developing methodologies for a design framework tailored to future aeronautic systems.

This research is part of the nationally funded project "Large-Eddy Simulation in Aeronautical Applications; Wall Modeling, Robustness, Accuracy, and Efficiency (LESisMORE)," involving SAAB Aeronautics, Chalmers, KTH, and NSC. You will work on integrating scale-resolving flow simulations into SAAB’s design framework, advancing a more digitalized process for design, validation, and certification of next-generation aerial vehicles.

A key outcome of the LESisMORE project is GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) accelerated wall-modeled large-eddy simulation capabilities for aeronautical applications. Your research will also focus on turbulence modeling using physics-informed machine learning. The long-term aim is to enable high-fidelity simulations as a standard in design processes.

Major responsibilities

As a PhD student, your primary responsibility is to conduct and complete your doctoral studies. This includes:

  • Developing and refining scientific concepts.
  • Communicating your research findings through presentations and publications.
  • Engaging in teaching and departmental duties (10-20% of working hours), such as assisting in BSc and MSc courses.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must:

  • Hold an MSc degree in a relevant field.
  • Have completed coursework in Fluid Dynamics.
  • Possess programming experience.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Additionally, the ideal candidate is:

  • Self-driven and highly motivated, with strategic planning skills.
  • Creative, with a strong ability to implement innovative ideas.
  • Deeply interested in scientific computing and eager to expand their knowledge and skills in research, communication, and project management.

About the division

The Division of Fluid Dynamics conducts research in areas such as multiphase flow, turbulent flow (compressible and incompressible), aero-acoustics, and turbomachinery. Our mission is to contribute to sustainable industrial and societal advancements by delivering secure, efficient, and effective solutions to fluid flow challenges.

Our research combines computational and experimental approaches, addressing a wide array of topics. Some projects focus on the smallest scales relevant to fluid dynamics, while others analyze and model the functionality of complete industrial systems. Our applied research is conducted in close collaboration with industry, both through national initiatives and EU-funded projects

Contract terms

Full-time temporary employment. The position also includes teaching or other departmental duties corresponding to 10-20 % of working hours and is time limited up to 4.5-5 years depending on the amount of teaching and departmental work during your doctoral project.
