Are you passionate about cutting-edge nanotechnology, nanophotonics, photochemistry, and multidisciplinary research? Join the Langhammer group at Chalmers University of Technology to explore the intersection of advanced nanofabrication, nanofluidics, optical microcavities, and photochemistry.

About the project

Photochemical and photocatalytic reactions are pivotal to science and technology, with applications in organic synthesis, photosensitizers, wastewater treatment, CO2 fixation, and solar fuel production. At the same time, geometrically confining molecules at the nanoscale can alter reaction pathways and it is hypothesized that optical microcavities may offer further, to-date unexplored, handles fur tuning photochemical reactions by significantly enhancing the interaction between light and molecules inside the cavity.

This project combines these paradigms to create integrated nanoarchitectures comprised of optical cavities integrated with nanofluidic systems, enabling simultaneous nanoconfinement of chemical reactants and light. These nanoarchitectures aim to revolutionize photochemical synthesis, unlocking pathways for producing challenging organic compounds such as chiral and bioactive molecules.

The project builds on recent achievements in single-particle catalysis, nanofluidic microscopy, optical microcavities, and photochemistry under confinement by the project team of this research effort that also involves Prof. Timur Shegai and Prof. Angela Grommet at Chalmers and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation:

Langhammer group: Nat Methods 2022, 19, 751-758; Nat Commun 2019, 10, 4426; ACS Nano 2023, 17, 21030-21043.

Shegai group: Nature 2021, 597, 214-219; Nat Phys 2023, 19, 271-278.

Grommet group: J Am Chem Soc 2020, 142, 14557-14565; Acc Chem Res 2020, 53, 2600-2610
