We are offering a PhD position in the field of algorithmic graph theory. The position is a full-time employment with a competitive monthly salary and full social benefits for up to five years. You will be part of a dynamic and inspiring working environment in the beautiful city of Gothenburg on the West coast of Sweden.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals. The department is widely recognised for excellent research and education, and is strongly international with approximately 300 employees from more than 40 countries. Our department is located in Sweden’s second largest city, Gothenburg – the world’s most sustainable destination every year since 2016, according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index. The department is organised into four divisions where research spans from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. The position is placed in the Logic and Types unit of the Division of Computing Science, with Chalmers University of Technology as the employer.
By the starting date, you have a degree at Master's level or equivalent in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits. Knowledge in graph theory, classical/parameterized complexity, and algorithms is meritorious, as is a documented track record of research in the area of the project.
The department's working language is English, and the position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
As a PhD student, you acquire the skills and knowledge to conduct independent research, culminating in writing a scientific dissertation contributing to the development of knowledge in the subject area. More specifically, you will read, review, and write research papers; give presentations; take courses that complement your background; and perform research appropriate for the topic of the project you are appointed to under the guidance of the supervision team. The proposed work includes many opportunities for collaboration and interaction at the department and other universities.
This position is a great opportunity for you as a PhD student to develop your scientific and technical skills as part of a team of leading researchers in the area of algorithmic graph theory. The project in particular concerns exploring the boundaries between tractability and intractability for graph modification problems, both in the classical and parameterized setting. The goal is to develop general tools that can provide efficient algorithms for a wide range of graph modification problems.

Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers' general agreement for PhD student positions (as of May 2025, 34,550 SEK per month).
