Advance Fall Risk Prediction and Rehabilitation with Biomedical Radar!

Are you passionate about research that makes a real difference in people’s lives and society? Do you thrive on solving real-world challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration? This PhD student position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a multidisciplinary research project that bridges the knowledge from multiple engineering fields to address an essential need in healthcare.

About us

At the biomedical electromagnetics group, we conduct world-leading research in the development of microwave-based technologies for medical diagnostics, treatment, and monitoring. Our research activities span computational modeling, algorithm development (using both traditional signal processing and machine learning), antenna design, and system hardware development.  We collaborate closely with clinical experts to develop innovative technologies to address critical healthcare challenges, including stroke and trauma diagnosis, cancer treatment, early detection of fall risk and diseases, and data-driven rehabilitation.

About the research project

Fall among the elderly is a global public health concern, imposing a substantial burden on both healthcare systems and society. Accurate fall risk prediction and effective rehabilitation are essential for fall prevention.  Today’s clinical practice mainly relies on subjective assessment and observations.  Advanced sensor technologies and artificial intelligence offer the opportunity for data-driven rehabilitation through predictive analytics. This project is a close collaboration with the Department of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and the aim is to develop an innovative medical device to enhance fall risk prediction and support personalized rehabilitation strategies.

As a PhD student, you will develop a prototype system based on emerging biomedical radar technology to enable accurate fall risk assessment and personalized rehabilitation through detailed gait analysis. The work will involve experimental studies, algorithm development, and collaboration in clinical studies.  Besides gait and fall risk analysis, this project will also explore the use of biomedical radar for other medical applications and diseases.

Who we are looking for

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • The candidate should have a Master's degree or a degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in electrical engineering, engineering physics, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Very good knowledge of signal processing, machine learning, and electromagnetics.
  • Very good knowledge of programming (e.g. Matlab, Python, C/C++).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience with radar technologies, machine learning, or healthcare
  • Communication skills in Swedish are valuable.

 Main responsibilities

Your major responsibility is to pursue research in line with the project, publish scientific articles, and present research findings. As part of your PhD activities, you will receive further education by courses relevant for your research and your future career. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.

Contract terms

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
