We are looking for a PhD student in developing and understanding lead-free perovskites, as well as exploring their potential in solar cells.
Halide perovskites have emerged as one of the most promising materials for next-generation optoelectronic devices, particularly in solar cells, LEDs, photodetectors, and lasers. Their rapid rise in efficiency, from ~3% in 2009 to over 26% today, rivals and even surpasses conventional silicon solar cells. This remarkable progress is due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties.
Despite their promise, a major concern surrounding halide perovskites is toxicity, primarily due to lead (Pb) content. To address these issues, researchers are exploring lead-free alternatives (e.g., tin-based perovskites) and encapsulation strategies to prevent lead leakage. Additionally, recycling methods are being developed to recover lead and other materials from perovskite solar cells, making them more environmentally sustainable. The PhD candidate will focus on designing and synthesizing new promising lead-free perovskites, particularly anti-perovskites, understanding their electronic and photoelectronic properties, as well as exploring their potential in photovoltaic devices.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
You have graduated at Master’s level in Physics, Chemistry, Materials or a related field or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Physics, Chemistry, Materials or a related field. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.
Qualified candidates are expected to:
Please include a Letter of Intent, specifying: 1, why you want to do a PhD, 2, why you are interested in this position, and 3, why you believe that you are qualified for this position.
Our optoelectronics group focuses on solution-processed energy materials/devices, mainly based on semiconducting perovskites and organic semiconductors (https://liu.se/en/research/optoelectronics). The group is part of the Division of Electronic and Photonic Materials, where we develop photonic and electronic materials energy conversion and storage.
