Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 2 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 17,900 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The research group in Biochemical Process Engineering is responsible for a versatile laboratory with key competencies for bio-based products and processes that include pre-treatment of biomass, fractionation, fermentation, conversion processes, green chemistry, upstream and downstream processes. The research subject is part of the Department of Civil Engineering and Natural Resources with about 350 employees. Biochemical process technology develops integrated processes that combine biotechnology and chemistry to produce food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy carriers. In particular, the subject focuses on using bio-based raw materials (such as forest residues) and developing processes for biorefineries. The subject consists of 14 senior researchers and several doctoral students.
We are looking for a doctoral student in Biochemical Process Engineering with specialization in enzyme discovery, characterization and improvement for application in Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage processes.
In the CO2-REDUCE project, it is aimed develop an ultra-stable promoter to increase the CO2 capturing rate and CO2 removal efficiency of carbonate solutions, targeting function and stability at the ‘harshest’ benchmark conditions that is the Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) process. We will highlight the potential of carbonic anhydrase as a green promoter through the discovery, development, and application of ultra-stable enzyme variants, that tolerate a range of high temperatures and highly alkaline conditions and can be used simply as an additive in carbonate solutions to improve the performance of the conventional solvent.
The PhD project will be financed under the Swedish Energy Agency project CO2-REDUCE (Use of enzyme pRomotED-carbonate solvents for efficient post combUstion CO2 capturE)
As a doctoral student, you are trained in scientific thinking and writing. The work as a doctoral student is problem focused. You will develop skills to identify, define, formulate and solve problems of both a practical and theoretical nature. You will also develop your skills to work with complex theoretical and analytical issues and integrate these into current practice.
To be eligible for employment, a master's degree in chemical engineering, industrial biotechnology, enzymology or relevant is required in accordance with the ordinances found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
We are looking for a motivated colleague with a strong interest in research. You must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Good observation and communication skills are crucial. Previous experience enzyme mining from genomes and/or metagenomic databases, enzyme discovery, enzyme improvement (directed evolution, rational design) and/or use of advanced bioinformatics tools are very strong merits and will be considered beneficial.
Hands-on experience on use of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase will be a very strong asset.
Experience of using laboratory equipment and relevant practical experience, for example upstream and downstream enzyme production and enzyme assays are strong advantages. In addition, previous experience of disseminating scientific results, including both oral and written presentations, is seen as a strong qualification. The doctoral education will result in a doctoral degree after the corresponding four years of full-time studies.
