Restoration, Biodiversity, and preventing disease outbreaks

Research subject Biology

Description

This fully funded PhD position is available under the Horizon Europe project RESTORIED (https://restoreid.europamedia.org/). The project aims to understand the relationship among ecosystem restoration, biodiversity, and risk of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. The position is part of a network of European and African Universities and research groups.

In Sweden, the project explores the link between nature restoration, especially related to forest management, biodiversity, and disease prevention. Through field sampling, remote sensing, and statistical analyses, we study how restoring ecosystems can potentially reduce disease risks for both animals and humans. This includes developing innovative methods to make biodiversity sampling more efficient and accessible.

The Doctoral candidate will have an opportunity to take part in visits and meetings with consortium partners for additional training and knowledge exchange.

The project will be supervised by Associate Professor Jörgen Sjögren (SLU, Sweden), Assistant Professor Hussein Khalil (SLU, Sweden), Researcher Yonas Meheretu (SLU, Sweden) and Professor Frauke Ecke (University of Helsinki, Finland).

Qualifications

We are seeking a motivated candidate with excellent critical thinking and communication skills in written and verbal English. We seek a candidate who is capable of conducting primary research (in the field and in the lab) and developing scientific publications. The successful candidate needs to be able to work in a team context as well as independently, and we expect them to be pro-active and take own initiatives. Good numerical and statistical skills and some previous experiences in field and laboratory techniques are desirable. A driving license is required for travelling to field sites. Academic requirements include a M.Sc. (or comparable degree*) in Ecology or a closely related discipline, with a preferred emphasis on disease and restoration ecology.
