Position description

The PhD position is expected to join an EU-ITEA funded project MONA LISA, with several industrial partners from Sweden. Based on the needs of our industrial partner, the work will investigate the application of large language models (LLMs). This includes investigating the associated setup of a knowledge base and other optimizations, in an industrial setting. The aim is to easily retrieve and access relevant information/documentation and to provide useful decision-support. This means having a LLM based solution that can offer support to an engineer looking for relevant information, such as analysis of repair reports to offer efficient repair resolution strategies. An LLM-based approach can help find patterns, visualize them for early issue resolution.

The PhD student will undertake the following major tasks:

• Analyze industrial needs to set up a customized LLM-based solution.
• Investigate mechanisms to improve the setup and efficiency of such a solution.
• Conduct thorough scientific evaluations (through e.g. experiments and case studies) of the pros and cons of the solution.

The PhD student is expected to have 20% of the time teaching and 80% on research. However, in initial years, research can get extended up to 100%.

Qualifications

For basic eligibility, the following is required:

• A degree at an advanced level.
• At least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at an advanced level.
• Equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad through other means.

For eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in computer science, the specific eligibility requirements state that the doctoral student must hold a master's degree (240 higher education credits) in computer science, software engineering, systems engineering or equivalent.

Assessment criteria

Prior to employment, consideration must be given to the ability to assimilate third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education. In addition to these skills, particular attention will be paid to the following knowledge and experience:

• Knowledge of or experience in software industry.
• Experience in working with industrial applications.
• Experience of collaboration with individuals in various roles and environments, particularly with industry partners in industrial settings.
• Strong background in Computer Science
• Good knowledge of machine learning, artificial intelligence and generative AI
• Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, C/C++, etc)
• Proficient written and oral communication in English
